John Tory’s Political Obit and the 7th Commandment

It happened suddenly, unexpectedly this past Friday at the end of the work week: John Tory, the Progressive Conservative mayor of Toronto, Canada’s biggest city, resigned.  It was an  ugly end for the relatively popular career Ontario politician.

Tory loved his job as mayor, and a lot of people thought he was good at it. Though he was getting close to 70, he gave the impression that he could have done it “forever.” His work ethic was legendary due to the long hours he kept on the job. And the public also bought Tory’s political branding of a family man with a solid background and a 40-year-marriage. Tory’s popularity among Torontonians was high enough that he didn’t seem to have to be worried much about any serious political challengers—until the Leftist newspaper, The Toronto Star, published a story alleging that Tory had a zipper problem. As it is written:  “You may be sure that your sin will find you out!” (Numbers 32:23).

It seems John Tory had become involved in a consensual adulterous affair with a 31-year-old staffer who had been working in his office during the Covid lockdown craziness in Toronto. Rather than lie about it like former U.S. President Bill Clinton, Tory simply owned up to it and then resigned, surprising everyone.

In a society where almost anything goes in regards to a person’s sexual behaviour, to resign because of an adulterous affair seems terribly old-fashioned to those with a “progressive” orientation. There were more than a few politicians and media commentators who considered Tory’s indiscretion to be politically survivable. But for whatever reason, John Tory did not. So a distinguished career in public service ended suddenly and ignominiously. The Bible would assert that when one sins, dishonour follows as surely as night follows day.

Our present society doesn’t like to acknowledge the reality of sin and its consequences. That is to say, the Woke don’t believe that there really is a Creator God who established spiritual laws about correct sexual behaviour along with appropriate consequences for disobeying that divine morality. After all, most  “progressive” politicians and their Woke supporters assume that the Bible’s God and His teachings on sex are just so much nonsense and ancient mythology.

Well, I suppose one could ask John Tory whether he now thinks that it would have been better for him if he had obeyed the 7th of the 10 Commandments? (see Deuteronomy 5) Or whether his life would have been much less painful for him right now if he had just paid more attention to Ecclesiastes 10:1: Dead flies make the perfumer’s ointment give off a stench; so a little folly outweighs wisdom and honour.

General Petraeus, did you Betray Us?

Mark Twain once wryly remarked—essentially—that to not keep up with the news was to be un-informed. But to slavishly believe all that the news media puts out means only that one becomes mis-informed. How much can we really believe about the various news reports concerning the General David Petraeus affair?

I mean, really, what am I to think of the fact that the nation’s former top spy, CIA director Petraeus, didn’t know how to keep secret his adulterous affair with Paula Broadwell?

And Broadwell herself wasn’t an ordinary—married—civilian biographer type who just fell in love with the object of her literary obsession. She was also a former U.S. Army intelligence officer! And she is also accused of having a “substantial” quantity of classified government data on her home computers.

General Petraeus, did you betray us? The American president assures us, “No.”

Can I really believe that Petraeus and Broadwell were, in fact, just silly and hormonal, acting like adolescent kids in high school? And, the timing of the Petraeus affair hitting the news, is it just a coincidence, what with Barak Obama just re-elected as president, and Congress wanting Petraeus to testify about the recent Benghazi terrorist attack that killed the American ambassador to Libya as well as several other American operatives?  As Shakespeare might have penned in an updated version of Hamlet if he was alive and now writing: Something is rotten in America!

What’s really going on? Can we really know? What are we to make of the scent of skullduggery and adultery going on amongst the power elite of Washington? Is anyone among these leaders passionate about their people’s welfare and their people’s business rather than their own sexual and/or political passions?

Consider this warning from the prophet Isaiah about what lies ahead if we continue on the present path of collapsing morals and crumbling ethics exemplified by the Western world’s leader—America:

Ah, sinful nation,
a people laden with iniquity,
offspring of evildoers,
children who deal corruptly!
They have forsaken the Lord,
they have despised the Holy One of Israel,
they are utterly estranged. Why will you still be struck down?
Why will you continue to rebel?
The whole head is sick,
and the whole heart faint. From the sole of the foot even to the head,
there is no soundness in it,
but bruises and sores
and raw wounds….

Your country lies desolate; your cities are burned with fire;
in your very presence
foreigners devour your land;
it is desolate, as overthrown by foreigners….

Except the LORD of hosts had left us a very small remnant, we would have been as Sodom; we would have become like Gomorrah (Isaiah 1:4-7 English Standard Version, v. 9 Coulter translation).

Has Petraeus betrayed us?  President Obama and the FBI assure us that it doesn’t seem the general passed any secrets to his lover—at least that’s what the paper trail seems to say, according to press releases from this power elite. But how about the pillow talk?

Regardless of national security matters, Petraeus the adulterer  is no longer a good role model that Americans and their friends in the West can look up to for inspiration. Why even the Taliban is having a good laugh right now at the mighty Petraeus’ feet of clay.  The shame of it all! Giving such a misogynistic enemy a reason to mock the former point man in the West’s battle against backward, vicious, Islamists!

Sadly, the Petraeus affair is just the tip of an iceberg that merely hints at the enormous danger lurking just out of sight under the official, politically correct waterline: the wide spread decay of the West’s morals and ethics, rotting the heart and soul of our Western civilization from the inside out.

For some time this soul rot has been spreading widely among both the leaders and the led. Throughout history, the loss of noble virtues and high moral standards of conduct have always been the accurate indicators of a societal weakness leading to a political entity’s decline and eventual collapse. Trouble and danger come because moral rot provides the ideal growth medium for tyranny and oppression to flourish. This holds true whether we’re talking about the imaginary Empire of Star Wars fame or today’s American Empire as well as the European Union.

But all is not lost. Hope remains. A small remnant yet perseveres and stands in opposition to this moral landslide. If you resist willful blindness and listen carefully, you might hear the few voices quietly speaking, giving this warning:

Beware! Those who promise you freedom from biblical morality and ethics offer you a politically correct license to commit sexual immorality. Be these seducers high and mighty or low and humble, they are but deceitful pied pipers who desire to lead you to a wasteland devoid of inner peace, intimacy, and personal happiness.  They led Petraeus. And they are leading America also into utter ruin and disaster.  Consider this warning by the Apostle Peter about such cunning pied pipers:

They have wandered off the right road and followed the footsteps of Balaam son of Beor, who loved to earn money by doing wrong. But Balaam was stopped from his mad course when his donkey rebuked him with a human voice.

These people are as useless as dried-up springs or as mist blown away by the wind. They are doomed to blackest darkness. They brag about themselves with empty, foolish boasting. With an appeal to twisted sexual desires, they lure back into sin those who have barely escaped from a lifestyle of deception. They promise freedom, but they themselves are slaves of sin and corruption. For you are a slave to whatever controls you. And when people escape from the wickedness of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and then get tangled up and enslaved by sin again, they are worse off than before (2 Peter 2:15-20 New Living Translation).

Mohammed, Murder, and Multi-Cultural Mayhem

On June 16th delegates from Islamic countries like Pakistan, Iran, and Egypt pressed the UN’s Human Rights Council to order the UN’s Freedom-of-Religion investigator to adopt new guidelines to shield Islam from any comments being made in Western media that Muslims might deem derogatory.

These Muslim nations want stepped up UN investigations, UN labeling, and UN sanctions against what they call the Western media’s “Islamophobia.” They believe their right to avoid having their religious sensibilities offended by negative commentary or sardonic cartoons about Islam’s bloody weirdness should trump our Western free speech rights and liberties. In effect, the Mohammedans want to muzzle the Western media so that it self-censors like Middle Eastern media outlets.

So it seems that in the near future, coming to your favourite media outlets, Islamophobia will become the new homophobia for the politically correct set.

Ironically, on the same news day, June 16th, the frontpage news of my local newspaper was all about Canadian justice Bruce Durno sentencing Pakistani immigrant Muhammad Parvez and his son Waqas to life in prison with no chance for parole for 18 years. For Canada, that’s a really tough beaver fever of a sentence. Most garden-variety Canadian ax-murderers just get a couple of years in the slammer before being paroled for their good behaviour (sic).

So what was Muhammad’s and Waqas’s heinous crime? Murdering with their bare hands Aqsa Parvez, the 16-year-old daughter of Muhammad and younger sister of Waqas.

And what did this teenager do to deserve such brutal punishment by her father and older brother? She wanted a part-time job at a local Mississauga business. Horrors!  And she preferred wearing Western-style clothes to a Middle Eastern burka-sack. Scandalous! And, to add to these horrendous crimes, she even wanted to go to the movies. Can you believe the brazen nerve of that rebellious teen! So being the good Muslims that they are, Muhammad and Waqas swore on the Koran to kill Aqsa and so strangled her at the first possible opportunity.

At his sentencing, Justice Durno called Muhammad and Waqas “twisted, chilling, repugnant, and abhorrent.” I suppose in the near future the justice will have to temper his remarks to avoid being labeled “Islamophobic.”

The sad fact of life is that in Muslim countries Islamic menfolk think nothing of swearing on their Korans before murdering their womenfolk if they even so much as hear a rumor or have a suspicion of a supposed infidelity or instance of pre-marital sex. This is called “honour killing.” And a father or brother who murders a wife or a sister for such a reason usually faces no penalty in Muslim countries. So you can imagine how surprised Muhammad and Waqas are at getting 18 years in prison.

What I have a hard time understanding is why we Canadians opened the door for such Mohammedan barbarians in the first place? It’s not as though we don’t have enough of our own home-grown low-lifes in the first place. So why import more?

The answer, of course, lies in that wrenching shift in cultural orientation that Canada chose to make in the last quarter of the 20th Century when we proclaimed ourselves a multi-cultural country instead of a Christian nation. If we, instead, had insisted that any who wished to immigrate to Canada agree with and adopt Christian values to live by instead of Mohammedan values, then Aqsa Parvez would still be alive today as well as all the other women and girls who’ve been murdered in “honour killings” in Canada, Britain, and elsewhere in the Western world. For their only “crime” was in wanting to step beyond Islam’s strangling grasp in order to experience some of the freedoms and liberties we take for granted in our formerly Christian lands. Such freedoms are foundational to the Christian scriptures.

Christianity, of course, doesn’t encourage adultery or pre-marital sex either. Far from it! But practicing, active Christians understand that human beings make mistakes¾even serious, hurtful sexual mistakes. But a core Christian belief is that it is possible for a sinner to repent, change, and become a better person. This possibility of personal spiritual growth means it is our duty to extend forgiveness and mercy and to kindly assist in efforts aimed at restoration.

Consider this classic example of this Christian value:

Jesus returned to the Mount of Olives, 2 but early the next morning he was back again at the Temple. A crowd soon gathered, and he sat down and taught them. 3 As he was speaking, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in the act of adultery. They put her in front of the crowd.

4 “Teacher,” they said to Jesus, “this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 The law of Moses says to stone her. What do you say?”

6 They were trying to trap him into saying something they could use against him, but Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger. 7 They kept demanding an answer, so he stood up again and said, “All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!” 8 Then he stooped down again and wrote in the dust.

9 When the accusers heard this, they slipped away one by one, beginning with the oldest, until only Jesus was left in the middle of the crowd with the woman. 10 Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, “Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?”

11 “No, Lord,” she said.

And Jesus said, “Neither do I. Go and sin no more” (John 8:1-11 NLT).

Unfortunately, Mohammed didn’t agree with Jesus 1,400 years ago and the followers of that illiterate Arab tribal leader still don’t agree with Jesus’ teachings. So it is not surprising that the Muslim Koran is very different from the Christian Bible when it comes to values like love and forgiveness.

After all, Jesus paid in our stead the penalty for our sins through his own shed blood. But Mohammed like most polygamous, tribal leaders of his day, shed the blood of thousands who stood in his path to power in Arabia.

I wonder how long our Canadian elite, drunk on their multi-cultural delusions will continue to maintain that all religious beliefs are the same. They are not. The personal example and teachings of Jesus and Mohammed are very, very, very different. Aqsa Pervez could have told them that. But for now her voice has been strangled by Muhammad. Still, her innocent blood calls out! Are you listening?
